JORDAN SCOTT continued his impressive form in the men’s triple jump this season with back-to-back Diamond League success at yesterday’s Wanda Diamond League meet in Paris. Following his win in Oslo a week ago, he produced 17.27 metres to win the event and become the Diamond League leader with 23 points.

Ackera Nugent, the other Jamaican in action at the meet, was third in the women’s 100m hurdles.

Scott, who had opened with 17.11m and trailed Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso – who led with 17.21m going into the final round – overtook his opponent on his last attempt. Zango had to settle for second, with Thomas Gogois of France finishing third, with 17.11m. Scott actually had only two legitimate marks. He failed to register a legal jump after his opener until his final attempt.

“This is a very tactical event, so it is all about jumping smart and saving yourself for when it matters. Unfortunately, my coach was not here, so I had some figuring out to do by myself,” said Scott. “I am very pleased with the result, but I am not sure how much longer my personal best will stand. This is a long season and I am not too worried about it. It will happen at some point, and I am just grateful for jumping 17.27m today and happy with the win.”

In what has become the most competitive event in track and field, Nugent clocked a season’s best 12.30 seconds for her third-place finish. Diamond League leader Grace Stark of the United States made it quick back-to-back wins after her success in Oslo, stopping the clock at a personal best 12.21 and setting a new meet record, breaking the 33-year-old mark of 12.32 set in 1992 by Lyudmila Narozhilenko of Russia. Tobi Amusan of Nigeria, the world record holder, was second in a season’s best 12.30 as the top three finishers all went under the previous meet record.

In the first track event of the meet, the men’s 400m hurdles, the United States’ Rai Benjamin – fresh off his world-leading mark in Stockholm – picked up another win, clocking 46.93 to break the 46.98 meet record set by Abderrahman Samba of Qatar in 2018. Samba ended second yesterday in a season’s best 47.09s, with Trevor Bassitt of the United States third in 48.14, also a season’s best.

Trey Cunningham of the United States was in top form in the men’s 110m hurdles, equalling his personal best of 13.00s for the win. His countryman Ryan Beard finished second in a personal best 13.02 while it was a national record for Jason Joseph of Switzerland, who was third in 13.07. Olympic champion Grant Holloway of the United States, returning to competition after an injury earlier in the season, had to settle for fifth in a season’s best 13.11.

In an epic women’s 400m contest, Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic got the better of world leader Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain once again. Paulino had to stave off her training partner in a very close finish, winning in a season’s best 48.81 and, in the process, broke her own meet record of 49.12 set two years ago. Naser was second in 48.85s, with Martina Weil of China third in a national record, 49.83.
