Independent Members of ECJ to Break Deadlock Over Breaches of Political Code of Conduct

The independent members of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica, ECJ, will act as tie-breakers in the absence of consensus regarding breaches of the Political Code of Conduct.

This as the ECJ fulfils its role as the body responsible for playing the role of the Office of the Political Ombudsman.

Newly appointed Registrar of Political Parties at the ECJ, Llofraun Thompson, explained the workings of the office on Nationwide This Morning on Tuesday.

The ECJ is made up of nine members. There are two appointees from both major political parties. Four members are independent appointees. The Director of Elections rounds out the membership.

Miss Thompson says it’s still left to be seen how the commissioners will collectively ensure enforcement.
