The iconic reggae hit Bad Boys by Jamaican band Inner Circle has officially been certified Platinum in the United States, more than three decades after its original release.
The certification was updated on March 4 by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), confirming that the track has now surpassed one million units sold in the U.S. The song had previously held Gold certification since 1993.
A Song That Became a Global Pop Culture Classic
Produced by band founders Ian Lewis and Roger Lewis alongside Bernard “Touter” Harvey, the track features vocals from the late Calton Coffie, who passed away in 2023.
“Bad Boys” first appeared on Inner Circle’s 1987 album One Way, before later being included on their 1992 albumBad to the Bone.
Following the massive success of their 1993 hit Sweat (A La La La La Long), the band re-released “Bad Boys” as a single that same year, helping propel it to global popularity.
Theme Song for “COPS” and Hollywood Films
The song gained worldwide recognition after becoming the theme song for the long-running television series COPS.
According to the show’s creator John Langley, he intentionally chose a reggae track to give the police reality series a different tone.
“I was a Bob Marley fan — still am — and I thought it would be very interesting to counterpoint law enforcement with reggae,” Langley said in a 2017 interview.
The song’s popularity later inspired the title of the Hollywood action-comedy Bad Boys film franchise starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.
A Message Often Misunderstood
Despite its association with police shows and action films, Ian Lewis says the song’s deeper message is often overlooked.
Speaking to Rolling Stone in 2020, he explained that the lyrics actually focus on youth rebellion and family guidance, rather than glorifying crime.
“The song is about growing up as a teenager who wants to be a man but doesn’t understand that it’s the family that you should springboard from,” Lewis said.
Chart Success and Album Achievements
“Bad Boys” reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 52 on the UK Singles Chart. It is also Silver certified in the United Kingdom, representing 200,000 units sold.
Meanwhile, the album Bad to the Bone achieved significant success as well:
- Spent 49 weeks on the Billboard 200
- Peaked at No. 64 in the United States
- Reached No. 44 on the UK Albums Chart
The album was ultimately certified Platinum in the U.S. and won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1994.
A Legacy Band in Reggae
Inner Circle was formed in 1968 and has remained one of Jamaica’s most enduring reggae bands. Over the years the group has featured several notable members, including legendary singer Jacob Miller, who served as lead vocalist until his death in 1980.
The band’s current lineup includes Lancelot Hall, Trevor “Skatta” Bonnick, and Andre Philips, continuing the group’s long-standing influence on reggae and global pop culture.
