Innovabel Estate Land Audit Complete as Legal Recommendations Awaited

The audit into the land distribution under the Innovabel Estate Program has been completed, and legal advisors are expected to issue their recommendations shortly.  The investigation, first reported by Love News, centers on the underpricing of more than 100 parcels of land, including eight reportedly granted to a former city councilor. At the heart of the controversy are claims of unauthorized discounts under the project, which have allegedly cost the Belmopan City Council around two million dollars in lost revenue. Love News spoke with the Area Representative for Belmopan, Oscar Mira, who explained that they are waiting on directives from the Attorney General’s ministry.

Oscar Mira, Belmopan Area Representative: “What I can say is there was an audit that was taking place. That audit has finished. The mayor has  informed me that the auditors found some irregularities in the sale of those properties. That audit is now being looked at by the legal advisors and a recommendation will come out from it.”

Reporter: Alright, and so can we expect to see any action within the coming months or?
Oscar Mira, Belmopan Area Representative: “I don’t know, the last instructions that the mayor got was to get the Attorney General’s office to give proper legal advice on the findings of that audit that was done and that is where it is right now.”

In past reports, the government has indicated its willingness to take the matter to court if necessary.  The events related to the Innovabel Estate land project occurred between July 2021 and March 2024. The land distribution was conducted via the Belmopan City Council, under the leadership of Mayor Sheran Palacio.
