REYAN LEWIS, 2023 champion rider, measured titleholder and leading jockey Raddesh Roman, aboard MAJOR DANGER, reeling in the tearaway leader as an angler would an exhausted catch, in a well-timed ride to land yesterday’s Labour Day Trophy by a neck astride INTRESTNTIMESAHEAD.
Breaking widest from stall 11 to race third down the backstretch, INTRESTNTIMESAHEAD, last year’s St Leger winner, went in chase of MAJOR DANGER after FINAL LOAD’s ambitious attempt to press the leader fizzled three furlongs out.
MAJOR DANGER straightened clear but a cavalry charge ensued from all angles, led by INTRESTNTIMESAHEAD taking dead aim while renowned speedster FEARLESS FORCE, stablemate of the leader, uncharacteristically launched her bid midway the stretch run.
Meanwhile, STOMP THE RHYTHM produced a searing rail charge to move into contention inside the final half-furlong.
Hard as he tried to have tiring MAJOR DANGER hang on, Roman’s bid for a hat trick of wins on the 10-race card failed by a neck as INTRESTNTIMESAHEAD reproduced his sparkling exercise form to go by close home, winning the seven-furlong event in 1:27.0.
Though denied a hat trick, there was no stopping Roman’s third winner to close the programme, booting home ANOTHER MISSION, taking his tally to 41, well clear of Shane Ellis on 24 after landing the seventh and eighth aboard BOB THE BUILDER and MIDNIGHT GALAXY, respectively.
Dick Cardenas rode two winners, HEEZALION in the second and SIR WONG DON in the sixth, closing the Reggae 6 mandatory payout, which returned $486,325 after being rocked by 25-1 upsetter, SIX AVENUE, in the fifth.
Racing continues this afternoon with another 10-race programme to close the dual Labour Day meet.
