IPL suspended for one week amid rising India-Pakistan tensions

MUMBAI, India (CMC):

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a one-week suspension of the Indian Premier League (IPL) following escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan.

The decision comes after India accused Pakistan of carrying out drone and missile strikes on three military bases, a claim Pakistan has denied. Meanwhile, Pakistani authorities report that Indian airstrikes have killed 31 people and injured 57 in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir since Wednesday.

Tensions flared further after India launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ on Tuesday, conducting a series of retaliatory strikes. The conflict stems from last month’s killing of 26 civilians in Indian-administered Kashmir, which India blames on Pakistan-backed militants, an allegation Pakistan denies.

The BCCI stated that it consulted franchises, broadcasters, and sponsors before making the decision.

The suspension follows Tuesday’s abandoned match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala because of floodlight failure. The city’s proximity to the disputed Kashmir region prompted evacuation plans for players, staff, and media.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has relocated its remaining matches to the UAE.

The IPL, the world’s most lucrative T20 league, was scheduled to run until May 25, with 16 matches remaining.
