Orange Walk was the venue chosen by the Cayo Sustainable Futures Initiative (CSFI) for its Biocultural Fair 2025 in celebration of International Jaguar Day at the Philip Alvarez Park. Held under the theme “Coexistence: One People, One Landscape,” the event brought together community members, conservation partners, cultural performers, and national leaders to honor Belize’s iconic jaguar while promoting environmental stewardship and harmonious living with wildlife. The day opened with a vibrant ceremony followed by inspirational addresses, cultural performances, live music, and interactive educational booths that showcased the critical work being done to protect Belize’s natural heritage. Families, students, and visitors filled the park, creating an energetic and festive atmosphere centered on conservation awareness and community unity. Special invited guests included Minister of State in the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Climate Change & Solid Waste Management, Ramiro Ramirez, BTIA President Efren Perez, and Director of the Belize National Biodiversity Office, Saul Cruz, all of whom highlighted the importance of collective action in safeguarding Belize’s ecosystems and wildlife. A wide range of conservation partners participated in the fair, offering hands-on activities and sharing knowledge with attendees. These included the Belize Forest Department, Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT), Belize National Biodiversity Office (NBIO), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), Programme for Belize, Communities for Wildlife Conservation, BTIA Orange Walk Chapter, Three Lagoons Sustainability Program, Sea of Life, Sarteneja Alliance for Conservation and Development (SACD), and Oceana Belize. Organizers also expressed gratitude to the Orange Walk Town Council for providing the venue, as well as key event supporters, the International Tropical Conservation Foundation, Burgers’ Zoo, and Friends of Belize, whose contributions made the fair possible. The successful celebration marked a meaningful reminder of Belize’s commitment to conservation, culture, and community engagement. Organizers say more outreach events and wildlife education activities are planned as efforts continue to protect the country’s biodiversity and strengthen the public’s role in environmental stewardship.
