Jamaican artist Jah9’s new single “Hurricane,” the third chapter in her ongoing Open Heart Project, is out today, October 10. Produced by Winta James, the track builds on her distinctive Neo-Reggae-Soul sound and offers an unflinching look at romantic fantasy giving way to reality. It will be released via VP Records.
The Open Heart Project is a four-part series tracing the stages of a relationship: awakening, growth, disillusionment, and reconciliation. Jah9 introduced the series in 2023 with “Open Heart,” a prelude rooted in her years of self-discovery in Tanzania, followed by last year’s “Match,” which captured the rush of early romance. “Hurricane” moves into rupture and reckoning, portraying the conflicts that follow the honeymoon phase. It also sets the stage for the finale.
“Our ancestors have long used storytelling to pass on wisdom, build connection and strengthen shared values. With “Hurricane”, my intention is to gather and hold space for like minds and open hearts to have meaningful and necessary conversations,” says Jah9.
The release arrives with a self-directed visualizer. Conceptually paired with “Match,” the visual runs two storylines in parallel – one rooted in expectation, the other in reality. Symbolism and subtle details expose the fault lines within the relationship.
Since the release of her debut New Name in 2013, Jah9 has established herself as a singular force in Jamaican music. Her 2020 album Note to Self was named one of the year’s best reggae albums by BrooklynVegan, while outlets including The New Yorker and Billboard have highlighted her as a leading voice in Jamaica’s contemporary sound. Over the past year, she has brought her music to live audiences across Jamaica, the UK, Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.
“Hurricane” is available now on all streaming platforms.
