Jahreem ‘32’ Staine Opts for Trial in Gang Activity Case

Heavily escorted by police and surrounded by heightened security, 22-year-old Jahreem Staine, also known as “32,” was taken to the Kolbe Foundation Prison today following his appearance in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he declined a sentencing indication and chose to proceed to trial on a gang-related charge. Staine appeared before Magistrate Mannon Dennison on a charge of promoting gang-related activity, which includes allegations of displaying a hand sign associated with the Crips street gang. During the hearing, Staine sought a sentencing indication from the court as he contemplated changing his plea from not guilty to guilty.  Magistrate Dennison explained that under Section 3J-1 of the Crime Control and Criminal Justice Act, the offence carries penalties of up to five years imprisonment, a fine of up to $20,000, or both. On hearing the possible sentence, Staine rejected the court’s indication, maintained his not-guilty plea, and informed the court that he would take his chances at trial.  His next court appearance is scheduled for January 13, 2026, which has been set as the date for disclosure in the matter.  Staine is also facing two additional charges of contempt of judicial order, stemming from alleged breaches of his High Court bail conditions. Police claim that he failed to sign in as required at the Belama Police Station on September 5, and October 3.  In separate matters, Staine has a pending case for attempted murder, for which he was previously granted High Court bail and is awaiting a preliminary inquiry. Police allege that he and co-accused Eric Frazer were involved in a shooting incident targeting Jimmy Rojas, on May 3, at the corner of Tibruce Street and Croton Lane in Belize City.  Staine has also survived two apparent attempts on his life in recent months. On September 5, gunmen reportedly opened fire on him near Buttonwood Primary School shortly after he exited the Magistrate’s Court, though he escaped unhurt. Approximately a month later, another attack was reported near Horizon Primary School in Ladyville, during which two men were wounded while Staine again avoided injury.
