Podcaster Jhaedee “Jaii Frais” Richards is in hospital under police guard, and Dancehall producer and manager Jahvel “Jahvy Ambassador” Morrison is in police custody after three people were shot during the Big Wall Revolution carnival party on Sunday night at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in St Andrew.
The podcast host is reportedly being treated for what has been described as ‘superficial injuries’.
One of the other injured persons was a bystander, Jeremy Watson, a United States citizen, visiting Jamaica for carnival festivities, was shot in the hand.
The third person shot, Trevor ‘Chum’ Twaite, was reportedly a member of entertainer 450’s entourage and is said to be in critical condition at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).
Head of the Police Area Four, Assistant Commissioner Michael Phipps, said the investigation is still at an early stage. “Investigations are ongoing and we will take the appropriate course of action thereafter,” Phipps said.
Reports are that Jaii Frais visited the restroom at the Big Wall event. Upon leaving the bathroom, ‘Jahvy Ambassador’ slapped Richards across the face.
He says one of the men in the group pulled a firearm and pointed it at him.
Jaii Frais reportedly grabbed on to the firearm and disarmed the man.
It’s further understood that Jaii Frais says the known music producer allegedly pulled a firearm from his waist and pointed it at him. Jaii Frais also reported that the music producer allegedly opened gunfire in his direction.
Jaii Frais who had disarmed one of the men from the group and had the firearm, returned gunfire while running away from them.
He then reportedly ran to the police to seek assistance and handed over the firearm to the lawman.
Jaii Frais is a prominent voice in the Jamaican podcasting scene, with two highly successful podcasts, including the Let’s Be Honest podcast. It is alleged that he had made a statement during a recent podcast that ‘450 had fallen off’ and this statement triggered the altercation.
At least two firearms were pulled during the incident — a Glock 9mm pistol which was taken from Morrison, who is reported to be a licensed firearm holder, and the other firearm, which Richards turned over to the police after allegedly disarming one of his attackers.
The incident has raised serious questions about implementing stricter safety protocols and improved emergency preparedness at public events.
Organisers of the Big Wall event apologised to its supporters.
“The isolated act does not reflect the standards, spirit or values of Big Wall. For over a decade, we have built a safe inclusive and world-class carnival experience with an unblemished record of safety and professionalism,” the statement said.
“We are already reviewing all security protocols with law enforcement and private security partners to strengthen our measures moving forward.”
