Trinidad and Tobago was handed a 5-0 defeat to miss out on the team title in the Senior Caribbean Regional Badminton Confederation (CAREBACO) Championship team events hosted by the Jamaica Badminton Association (JBA) at the University of Technology (UTECH) Auditorium in Kingston, Jamaica, on Tuesday night.
Coming off a 3-2 loss against Barbados, the T&T team needed to beat the Jamaicans to have any chance of staying in contention for the team title.
However, it was not to be, as T&T’s Travis Sinanan and Chequeda De Boulet were beaten 19-21 and 16-21 in the opening mixed doubles tie by Kenneth Anglin and Breanna Bisnott.
Sinanan was then humbled by Joel Angus in the men’s singles 8-21, 9-21 for the host to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five matches.
De Boulet then needed a win over Tahlia Richardson to keep T&T in the contest, but despite a valiant effort, she fell 21-11, 23-25, and 13-21 as Jamaica secured the tie 3-0.
Anglin and Angus then combined to beat T&T’s Aditya Maharaj and Jason Ramjass 21-10 and 21-6 before Bisnitt and Richardson defeated Cheyenne Bhola and Nekeisha Blake 21-5 and 21-7 to complete the 5-0 sweep.
In their opener against Barbados, Maharaj and Blake were defeated in the mixed doubles opener by Shae Martin and Sabrina Scott, 19-21 and 13-21.
T&T’s Yannic Inniss was then swept aside by Barbadian Kennie King in the men’s singles 11-21, 13-21 before De Boulet won her women’s singles against Monyata Riviera 21-15, 21-15 to get T&T on the board at 2-1.
However, T&T’s joy was short-lived as Ramjass and Sinanan were then outplayed in the men’s doubles, 13-21 and 14-21, by King and Martin to surrender the tie 1-3.
With the tie already decided, Blake and De Boulet then won the women’s doubles 21-10, 14-21, and 21-10 against Shania Forde and Riviera for a 2-3 final score.
On Wednesday night (August 12), Barbados faced Jamaica for the senior team title, while in the junior team event, Jamaica faced off with last year’s runner-up, Guadeloupe, in the decider.
On Monday, in the opening match, Jamaica edged Barbados 3-2, and on Tuesday, Guadeloupe trounced the Barbadians 5-0.
T&T won the junior team title last year, beating Guadeloupe in the final, but did not submit a team this time around.
The senior and junior individual events will start from Friday (August 14), to Tuesday (August 18).
Notable absentees from the national team are recent Central American and Caribbean Games participant Reece Marcano, along with Will Lee due to prior commitments, while Vishal Ramsubhag, the second-ranked national player, was a surprising non-selection for the national team.
