TEAM JAMAICA picked up the bronze medal at the recently concluded Caribbean Regional Badminton Confederation (CAREBACO) Juniors Team Championship, defeating host nation Barbados 3-0 in the third-place play-off match.

Jamaica recovered well after their 3-2 semi-final defeat to Trinidad and Tobago to conclude their campaign on Sunday.

Jamaica fell to the twin-island republic in a tightly contested match as both nations clashed for an intense outing.

Amir McBean defeated Kaveri Ramoutar 21-15, 17-21, and 21-15 in his individual match before teaming up with Daniel Ford in a doubles fixture to down Ramoutar and Ethan Ramcharan 21-14, 21-15.

Their victories were not enough, however, as Trinidad would claim three victories to book their spot in the final.

Ramcharan and T’Shelle Barnes defeated the duo of Ford and Jade Ranger in their doubles match, while Barnes teamed up with Amara Urquhart to defeat Jamaica’s Abigail Harvey and Sue-Ann Ogle.

Urquhart grabbed another win for the twin-island republic as she toppled Ranger in their individual match.

Trinidad went on to win the gold medal, while Guadeloupe claimed silver.

Playing at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium in Barbados, Ford started strong for the Jamaicans, getting the better of Xavi Haynes 21-11 and 21-16 in their singles match.

Ranger extended Jamaica’s lead as she got the better of Sahara Brathwaite in her singles match, edging the first set 22-20 before earning more breathing room in the second with a 21-17 win.

Jamaica completed their triumph in the doubles match as Ranger teamed up with McBean to outplay Nathan King and Kimmara Tull-Williams, 21-14 and 21-11, to secure their third-place finish.

Jamaica Badminton Association President Vishwanauth Tolan praised the team for their performance, saying it was a step in the right direction on the way to being globally competitive.

“We are extremely proud of our young team. Their determination and discipline were evident on court, and this bronze medal is just the beginning of what we believe will be a resurgence of Jamaican dominance in regional badminton,” Tolan said.

“With continued exposure and support, these athletes will be ready to compete, not just in the Caribbean, but [also] at the Pan Am and global levels.”

Jamaica will now turn their attention to the CAREBACO Individual Championships set to begin today and run through to August 23.
