Jamaican-born pilot and filmmaker Beth Powell has received international acclaim after her documentary Discovering Bessie Coleman captured two major awards at the Cannes Diversity Awards, further elevating Jamaica’s presence in global filmmaking and storytelling.
The documentary, which explores the life and legacy of aviation pioneer Bessie Coleman, was awarded Best Documentary and the Director’s Choice Award, recognizing both its powerful storytelling and creative execution.
Released in 2024, the film was directed by Powell and produced by Lorna Chin. It chronicles the remarkable journey of Coleman, who overcame racial and gender barriers in the early 20th century to become the first African American and Native American woman to obtain a pilot’s license, inspiring generations of aviators and trailblazers worldwide.
The recognition at Cannes represents a significant achievement for Powell, whose own background as a pilot brought a unique perspective to telling Coleman’s story. Through the documentary, she sought not only to highlight a pioneering figure in aviation history but also to examine themes of perseverance, ambition, and representation that continue to resonate today.
Reflecting on the project, producer Lorna Chin revealed that Powell first approached her in 2023 with the vision of creating a documentary centered on Coleman’s extraordinary life.
According to Chin, the creative team spent approximately a year developing the narrative before deciding to incorporate a distinctly Jamaican storytelling approach into the production.
That decision helped shape the documentary’s tone and presentation, blending historical storytelling with cultural influences that brought a fresh perspective to Coleman’s legacy and broadened the film’s appeal to international audiences.
In addition to the documentary’s success, Powell received individual recognition at the event, earning the Better World Fund Commitment Award for her contributions to community development and her work using film as a platform for education, empowerment, and social impact.
The award highlights Powell’s growing reputation as both a filmmaker and advocate, recognizing efforts that extend beyond the screen to inspire positive change through storytelling.
The success of Discovering Bessie Coleman underscores the increasing visibility of Caribbean creatives on the global stage and reflects the growing influence of Jamaican talent within the international film industry. It also shines a spotlight on the enduring importance of preserving and sharing stories of historical figures whose achievements helped break barriers and expand opportunities for future generations.
For Powell, the Cannes honors mark a significant milestone in a career that bridges aviation, filmmaking, and cultural storytelling, demonstrating how powerful narratives can connect audiences across borders while celebrating pioneers whose legacies continue to inspire the world.
