Jamaican-born chef Darian Bryan emerged victorious on Thursday night, winning Season 5 of the hit American cooking competition Next Level Chef and earning top honours on one of television’s most competitive culinary stages.
Bryan triumphed over fellow finalists Connor Caine and Nicole “Cole” Lawson after weeks of intense competition on the Fox series, which features aspiring chefs battling through high-pressure culinary challenges under the mentorship of celebrity chefs, including internationally renowned restaurateur Gordon Ramsay.
The season began with 24 contestants divided into three categories, professional chefs, home chefs, and social media chefs, all competing for a life-changing grand prize and the opportunity to train under Ramsay and the show’s other culinary mentors. Bryan, who competed in the professional chefs category, consistently stood out throughout the season by proudly showcasing the flavors and traditions of Jamaican cuisine.
Speaking in an interview with TV Insider following his win, Bryan described the experience as deeply emotional and meaningful, particularly considering his journey from Jamaica to one of America’s biggest cooking competition platforms.
“It’s just a blessing to show that. I’m coming from Jamaica with not much, and to come here and get crowned king on a stage like this, especially, it’s a Gordon Ramsay show, and he’s been my mentor for the last 15 years of watching him, it’s just a grace,” Bryan said.
Bryan admitted he quickly identified both Lawson and Caine as major threats early in the competition, noting the exceptionally high standard among the professional chefs. However, he remained committed to cooking from the heart and leaning into the dishes and flavors that shaped his upbringing.
For the finale, Bryan infused the menu with unmistakable Caribbean influences, drawing inspiration directly from Jamaican street food culture and traditional island cuisine. Among the standout dishes were pepper lobster inspired by Jamaica’s famous roadside pepper shrimp vendors, along with escovitch-style preparations familiar throughout the Caribbean.
“Pepper lobster slash pepper shrimp, we have all throughout the Caribbean, all through Jamaica. You see all those folks on the side of the road selling pepper shrimp, and also the escovitch is something you see everywhere,” he explained.
Bryan said remaining authentic to Jamaican cuisine throughout the competition was important to him personally and professionally. He added that he would not have forgiven himself had he abandoned his roots in pursuit of victory.
The victory marks a major accomplishment for the Jamaican chef and adds to the growing global recognition of Caribbean cuisine on mainstream international culinary platforms.
Next Level Chef currently streams on Hulu.
