Jamaicans Big Winners in Kingston Leg of Grand Slam Track

The first ever staging of Grand Slam Track ended at the National Stadium in Kingston on Sunday with two-time world 100m hurdles champion Danielle Williams becoming the first Jamaican to be crowned a Grand Slam winner.

Williams, the reigning world champion, secured the women’s short hurdles title after winning the 100m event in 11.54 seconds, which gave her 12 points.

On Saturday, she bagged eight points after finishing second in the 100mH, for a total of 20 points. The two days of work has earned her JM$15.7 million Jamaican dollars.

Another Jamaican, Ackera Nugent, was second in the 100m in 11.57 seconds, placing third overall in the short hurdles slam. She bagged JM$4.7 million.

Roshawn Clarke collected close to JM$8 million for his two days of work, after finishing second to Brazil’s Alison Dos Santos in the men’s long hurdles with 13 points to Dos Santos’ 24.

Kemba Nelson was fourth in the women’s short sprints, with nine points for JM$2.3 million. Andrenette Knight took home JM$4.7 million for finishing third in the women’s long hurdles and Shian Salmon fourth for JM$2.3 million.

American track icon Michael Johnson is the main man behind Grand Slam Track.

The four-meet series now heads to Miami for its second staging from May 2-4.

Johnson says given what happened in Kingston, he’s convinced the athletes have bought fully into the series.
