Japan’s relationship with Belize extends beyond diplomacy and development projects, with cultural exchange and education also playing a role in strengthening ties between the two countries. As Belize and Japan approach 45 years of diplomatic relations in 2027, the Embassy of Japan is using its annual Japan Day to educate Belizeans to the country’s traditions, contemporary culture and educational opportunities. This year’s event will feature the Belize National Orchestra performing Japanese musical pieces, including Japan’s national anthem. The programme also highlights the coexistence of traditional Japanese arts and modern cultural influences, including anime and other aspects of Japanese pop culture. Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan, Yumiko Shinyan, says this year’s event will feature a musical collaboration between Japan and Belize.
Beyond the cultural showcase, the embassy says these exchanges help build connections between people, while education offers another avenue for Belizeans to engage with Japan. Shinyan says Japan Day will also explore how traditional customs and contemporary interests, including anime, can introduce younger generations to Japanese society.
Japan Day is scheduled for Sunday, October 25, at the Civic Center in Belize City, with free admission. The Japanese government provides MEXT scholarships for eligible students interested in pursuing higher education or specialized studies in Japan. Belize and Japan formally established diplomatic relations in November 1982, following Belize’s independence the previous year. Their cooperation has since included development, education, human-resource development and disaster-risk reduction
