Jayme Marin Sentenced to 11 Years for Killing Cousin During Schizophrenic Episode

Thirty-four-year-old Jayme Marin has been sentenced to over 11 years in prison for killing one of his relatives and attempting to kill another. Marin was initially deemed mentally unfit but was later cleared to stand trial for the 2019 murder of his cousin, Isaac Marin, and the attempted murder of his other cousin, Carlos Marin. He entered a plea bargain and today was sentenced to two terms of 11 years, 9 months, and 16 days in prison. The sentences will run concurrently.  Evidence before the court was that on October 22, 2019, Jayme Marin, then 28, attacked Carlos Marin with two knives, stating, “The devil wants your soul.” When 18-year-old Isaac Marin intervened to protect his brother, he was fatally stabbed. Evidence presented during the case indicated Marin suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and was off his medication at the time of the incident. Justice Nigel Pilgrim cited aggravating factors including the use of two knives and the presence of relatives during the stabbings. Mitigating factors included Marin’s lack of prior prison infractions, his genuine remorse, and his diagnosed mental condition, leading to deductions from an initial 18-year sentence. Marin was represented by attorney Arthur Saldivar, and the Crown by counsel Shanell Fernandez Peyrefitte. Marin’s bail was revoked in July 2024 after he failed to appear for court hearings and reportedly refused his medication.
