JDC Urged to Take Firm Stance on Panel Selections for Future Political Debates

At least two members of the media fraternity are calling on the Jamaica Debates Commission, JDC, to assert its authority in making a final decision on the panel selections for the upcoming political debates.

This after the Opposition PNP declared its unwillingness to participate in the debates if any journalist from Nationwide News Network is included on the slate of questioners or moderators.

CEO of the Western Mirror, Lloyd B. Smith, says the JDC must do its job.

Smith is a former PNP MP.

The PNP says Nationwide News reporters Ricardo Brooks and Tauna Thomas are not welcome to the lineup of questioners for the debates.

Additionally, the party has told the Commission that the presence of George Davis as a moderator would be a deal breaker.

According to the PNP, they would also boycott the event if RJR host Emily Shields is added to the debates.

On Monday, the Press Association of Jamaica condemned what it says is political interference and politicisation of journalists.

Host of the Frankly Speaking Podcast and former PAJ President, Franklin McKnight, agreed.

Meanwhile, Public Commentator, Kevin O’Brien Chang, is recommending that the Jamaica Debates Commission employ a three-person referee panel to monitor the questioning of those participating in the debates.

O’Brien Chang says he’s confident the Commission will take a firm stance on the matter.
