With his new single — Light of Mine — to be dropped in a matter of days and departure for a tour in Brazil on the horizon, Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Jesse Royal says things are looking up for him and he is grateful.
Following his performance on Sunday at the Barita Wealth Management Brunch held at the Mercedes-Benz Showroom in Kingston, The Gleaner caught up with the artiste who literally arrived on the island some hours before, having been in Saint Petersburg in Russia.
“ Light of Mine is like one of my favourite songs because mi get fi show off little wid the idea of there is nothing that anyone can do to dim my light. Been through the fire and we never get burn. We go through the deepest of seas, and we never drown,” Jesse Royal explained to The Gleaner.
“We overstand seh bwai we have some angel weh a step wid we, and a help to direct we, and it a go hard fi throw this vessel off [of] weh Jah mission is, but this little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine,” he said.
Speaking of his tour in Brazil, Jesse Royal said he was excited because this would be his fifth time performing in that territory, and the reaction from that nation to his music, was one he looked forward to.
“We’ll be hitting like five cities in Brazil, from Bahia to Rio to São Paulo to spread the reggae music. Dem love di reggae music ova deh, and for me, I like to give people opportunities to make memories [and] to really fall in love,” Jesse Royal told The Gleaner.
“For me with the reggae music, we have to be ambassadors [for Jamaica]. We have to take it out deh inna di world and remind the people why this is what I chose. Jamaica has always been a big big thing pan di map. It’s a small place that makes an incredibly big impact around the world,” he said.
He also recently released the single Born in Jamaica with MediSun and Beres Hammond.
For this, he said, “I’m really excited about sharing all we’ve learnt through these [tours] for all these years and present the reggae music to our people inna da way deh.”
After he returns to the island, he will be looking forward to hosting the Jesse Royal & Friends High Life Festival on April 19 at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in St Andrew, which will feature fellow artistes such as Ras-I and Big Youth. This will be held in recognition of the annual 4/20 worldwide herb/cannabis culture calendar event.
He said there are some other artistes to be announced this week.
Additionally, he said he was working on a project that would unfold in two months, which will be his follow-up project since his Grammy nomination.
Jesse Royal also has other shows already lined up for the remainder of the year, with a performance scheduled for the Green Mountain Reggae Festival set for September 5-7 in the town of Bradford in Vermont in the United States.
“So I’m just excited about weh reggae music de and weh di people de, and we get fi tour the world and see seh people roun di world are excited and literally sitting [and] waiting on us to release music because we’re the only genre weh livicated to love, unity and overstanding,” he said.
Jesse Royal started his performance for Barita staff and customers with a positive vibration, performing his This Morning single, followed by Blessing, his song that features Yohan Marley , Modern Day Judas, and a cover of Bob Marley and the Wailers’ Waiting in Vain.
