The governing Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, says the decision by Jamaica Public Service Company, JPS, to discount bills for some residential customers, is a step in the right direction.

In a statement to the media on Tuesday, deputy general secretary of the JLP, Richard Creary, welcomed news of the discount and urged JPS to consider what additional steps may be taken to ease the burden facing consumers.

He’s urging the company to intensify efforts to restore electricity to sections of the island, particularly St. Elizabeth and Clarendon, where several residents are still without power.

In the meantime, Creary says Energy Minister Daryl Vaz is to be commended for his role in the concessions offered by the utility provider.
