“Lies, lies, lies”.
That’s the word from Finance Minister Fayval Williams who is asserting that the PNP’s proposal to increase the income tax threshold to 3-point-5 million dollars cannot be done without imposing new taxes.
She made the claim while responding to questions during Tuesday night’s national political debate on the economy.
But, Opposition Spokesman on Finance, Julian Robinson has also pushed back saying they won’t impose any new taxes and labelling the JLP’s costing of its plan as “probox maths.”
Colliecia Wright reports.
According to Robinson, the PNP’s income tax proposal will cost $55 billion.
Robinson says the party would be able to implement the income tax threshold increase starting April,2026 if elected to govern.
The Opposition Spokesman reiterated that revenue growth and adjustments in programmes spending would fund the threshold promise.
Robinson did not identify which programmes would be adjusted.
But, Finance Minister Fayval Williams is asserting that the PNP’s proposal will be impossible without the imposition of new taxes.
Meanwhile, for the first time since the JLP’s Manifesto launch on Sunday, Minister Williams disclosed that her party’s 15 percent income tax base rate plan will cost between 25 and 30 billion dollars.
She did not disclose how the phased plan to shift the income tax base rate from 25 percent to 15 percent would be funded.
The Opposition Spokesman on Finance is questioning the figures Minister Williams provided from the technocrats to fund the JLP’s latest income tax plan.
Meanwhile, JLP Campaign Chairman, Dr. Chris Tufton says the PNP’s income tax promise is designed to trick voters ahead of the September 3 general election.
