JLP standard bearer for North West St Catherine, Newton Amos says a growing number of voters are turning to the ruling party after years of broken promises and underwhelming representation by the PNP.
He was speaking on Nationwide This Morning on Tuesday.
Mahiri Stewart reports.
According to Amos, constituents are tired of the status quo in North West St Catherine.
Amos will be contesting the general elections for a third time on the JLP’s ticket.
In 2016, Amos lost to then longstanding MP, the PNP’s Robert Pickersgill.
Pickersgill won the seat for the PNP from 1989 to 2020.
In 2020, he was also bested by the PNP’s Hugh Graham who won the seat by 148 votes following a magisterial recount.
Graham secured 5,371 votes and Amos got 5,223.
This was one of the PNP’s smallest margins of victory in the seat.
Graham stepped away from the PNP’s Shadow Cabinet in 2023 and has faced backlash for his prolonged absences from Parliament since then.
Amos claims Graham has been an absentee MP.
The former Senior Superintendent of Police says it’s in the best interest of the constituents of North West St Catherine to vote for the JLP.
Amos is set to face the PNP’s Damion Crawford in the September 3 General Election.
Meanwhile, Newton Amos says concerns about his electability following two defeats at the general election are being exaggerated.
