JLP Scoffs at PNP’s $3.5M Tax Threshold Policy Promise

A kitchen-sink policy!

That’s how Chairman of the JLP’s Manifesto Committee, Kamina Johnson-Smith is describing the PNP’s promise to move the income tax threshold to $3.5 million if it forms government.

Daina Davy reports.

Addressing comrades at the party’s mass rally in Mandeville, Manchester on Sunday night, PNP President, Mark Golding, said under a government led by the PNP, Jamaicans who earn $3.5 million or less will not pay income tax.

The PNP had previously announced to move the threshold to $3 million.

In 2024, when the threshold stood at 1.5 million, Golding vowed to double it to 3 million when his party next formed government.

But in April this year, the Opposition leader said the promise was under review.

The Chairman of the JLP’s Manifesto Committee is asserting that the move to 3-million would result in more taxes for the Jamaica people.

Mrs. Johnson Smith says the PNP’s proposal would threaten the country’s economic gains.

The government announced during the budget debates in March this year, plans to abolish income tax for Jamaicans earning up to 2 million by 2027.

The threshold currently stands at $1.8 million.

Through a phased approach, it’s expected to be further adjusted to 1-point-9 million in April 1, 2026 with a final adjustment to 2 million as of April 1, 2027.
