JLP Writes to Ombudsman Over Possible Code of Conduct Breach by Dr Dawes

Deputy general secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, Senator Charles Sinclair Jr., has written to the Office of the Political Ombudsman, concerning a recent video posted on social media by People’s National Party, PNP, caretaker for South East St. Catherine, Dr. Alfred Dawes.

Senator Sinclair Jr. wants the office to probe whether Dr Dawes breached section 3A and 3B of the Political Code of Conduct.

Those sections state, inter alia, that nothing should be done or encouraged which can reasonably be expected to lead to volatile confrontation between opposing factions and every effort should be made to avoid contact which is likely to be provocative or which will increase tension between opposing political factions.

Senator Sinclair Jr. also wants the Political Ombudsman’s office to investigate whether Dr. Dawes has breached section 1A of the Political Code of Conduct, whereby no person should engage in, adopt or otherwise encourage, any form of violence or intimidation in their political activities.

He is also concerned about whether the PNP caretaker has breached section 1C which says no threat of violence whatsoever, whether expressed or implied, should be made against any group of persons.

Senator Sinclair Jr. says his complaint was fuelled by a recent social media post showing Dr. Dawes descending upon the JLP’s Belmont Road headquarters while donning an orange coloured cap.

He says the blatant violence and gangsterism in the lyrics of the song used by Dr. Dawes in the video is sufficient for a formal probe to be launched.
