Fervet Distance Classic meet director, Dwayne Johnson, says hosting such meets gives middle and long distant athletes an opportunity to shine away from the spot light of the sprint events.

St. Jago High’s Ryan Achua was one of the standout at the 3rd staging of the event at the Jamaica College Ashenheim Stadium.

Achua clocked an impressive fifteen minutes and 45.7 seconds to win the Boys’ Open 5000 metres.

Among the girls, Camperdown High’s Guyanese born Jennifer Byass broke the meet record in the Girls’ Open 3000-metres, stopping the clock at eleven minutes 22.66 seconds.

Kayah Anderson of The Queen’s School won the Class 2 800-metres in a personal best of two minutes 27.20 seconds.

Johnson says these performances highlights that Jamaica’s track and field is not just the sprints.

He says the meet has grown marginally despite being affected by the hosting of meets on the day.
