Managing Director of the Jamaica Stock Exchange, Dr. Marlene Street Forrest, is welcoming news of a feasibility study exploring the potential of a regional stock exchange for the Caribbean.
The study was commissioned by the CARICOM Private Sector Organization, CPSO.
CPSO has awarded the contract for the study to leading accounting and auditing firm, Price Waterhouse Coopers.
Chevon Campbell tells us more.
According to the CPSO, the study will focus on exploring models for a regional intermediary mechanism for securities trading, incorporating key market institutions such as Securities Exchanges, Securities Regulators, Broker-Dealers and Issuers.
The aim is the creation of an integrated capital market across CARICOM Member States.
Managing Director of the Jamaica Stock Exchange, the largest in the region, Dr. Marlene Street Forrest says the move is a welcome one.
The CPSO says the study will be undertaken in two phases.
Phase one is the establishment of the feasibility of a regional stock exchange.
Phase two will then identify the appropriate model and outline the fit for purpose architecture.
Dr. Street Forrest says a regional model has the benefit of seamlessly integrating the various disparate exchanges, thereby creating a larger pool for investment.
Meanwhile, the JSE Managing Director, says the regional model has the added benefit of making the Caribbean more attractive to global investors.
