President of the Media Institute of the Caribbean, Kiran Maharaj, has been elected to the steering committee of the Global Forum for Media Development. The announcement was made on July 16 during an Extraordinary General Assembly of the GFMD, following an online vote by member organisations.

Kiran Maharaj will represent Latin America and the Caribbean. Executive Secretary of the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism, Adriana Garcia, will also serve on the committee. They join representatives from Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia; Northern, Southern and Western Europe; the Middle East and North Africa; North America; and various global and policy-focused organisations.

The Global Forum for Media Development is a network of 203 media development and journalism support organisations from 82 countries. It promotes collaboration, best practices, and supportive environments for independent media outlets.

Responding to the announcement, Kiran Maharaj said the appointment allows the Caribbean to contribute to international efforts to strengthen ethical, operational, and innovative media systems. She committed to supporting the mission of the Global Forum for Media Development and promoting regional perspectives in global discussions.

The election of Kiran Maharaj reflects the growing presence of Caribbean media professionals in international media development. The appointment also highlights the region’s ongoing role in defending press freedom and supporting journalism practices.
