A comeback, a rebirth, a re-awakening, call it what you will, the fact is that “coffee with a K” is in the space with a song that is pure, cleansing ‘fyah’. And, she proves yet again that her fulsome flow is no fluke.
After a too-long drought, her eponymous single dropped April 29, accompanied by a music video that has already collected 356 thousand views and thousands of comments welcoming back the Grammy Kid and singing praises for the banger.
There’s just no way around it, Koffee is vibe meets mood meets flow and we believe Koffee when she says in the song that she is “ the baddest thing outta Jamaica”.
Teeming with bold, sassy lyrics, and a beat that keeps the listener bouncing, the Promised Land Recording single comes weeks after label owner Ferdy Unger-Hamilton, denied unsubstantiated media reports that Koffee had been dropped from RCA. He explained that Koffee’s only affiliation to RCA was through Promised Land, which had a distribution deal with the powerhouse label.
Social media have also been awash with other Koffee-related unconfirmed stories which will not be repeated here.
Koffee is the singer’s first release since her début studio album, Gifted. Released on March 25, 2022 by Promised Land Recordings and Columbia Records, it debuted at number two on the US Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
Although she didn’t release new music since 2022, Koffee remained active on the touring circuit. However, during last year, one of her few gigs was at Reggae Land in Milton Keynes, England, on August 4. She was part of the festival’s main stage line-up. Her last performance at a big festival in Jamaica was on Reggae Sumfest in 2022.
FIRST POST
On April 18, the Original Koffee, which seems to be the name she goes by now, made the first post on her Instagram page, alerting fans to her new single, by sharing a clip from the video and announcing the release date. One fan summed up the feelings of many with the post: “Me love it me love it me love it, thank you for making 2025 even better!!!”
For fans, the only problem – which is not really a problem– is that Koffee is too short. But the lyrics are so punchy that Koffee perhaps chose to give fans time to reflect, meditate and digest.
From the opening lines “I know they say they hip but this cup a Koffee, hippa,” there is a message. She goes on to name-check Masicka with “ ‘cause right now nobody sicker except the one Masicka,” whose name interestingly lights up on the amplifier as Koffee eases into her convertible in the first scene of the music video.
Continuing her Flow, Koffee sings “I ’m giving all these energies and singing all the melodies/Weh a mash up dem head/I’m trynna be a better me, not the way you remember me/I left that in the cemetery, that side of me is dead/I said what I said.”
She goes on to remind that “ it’s a coffee wid the K/Some call me Mikayla/I’m still Koffee when they wake up, boyeah/Getting to the paper, clean nuh need no makeup/Ain’t nobody greater, yeah/I’m the baddest thing outta Jamaica, yeah.”
Fans in the comments section of the YouTube video have been in overdrive. Here are a few of the comments:
Finally Koffee remembered her YouTube password.
The only bad thing about this song is that it ends.
She gained a little weight, man! Looks so good on her. She looks happy and healthy.
Drop the album already ... you starved us too much.
Creativity can’t be studied or copied. It’s a gift.
On Friday, Koffee was number four on the iTunes Top 100 Reggae Singles chart.
Born Mikayla Victoria Simpson on February 16, 2000, her Wikipedia bio states that Koffee gained popularity after uploading a video to Instagram of her singing.
In 2017, she released her first single, Legend, with just her voice and acoustic guitar. A tribute to Usain Bolt, the song became a viral Instagram hit, once the athlete reposted it on his own Instagram.
She released her début single, Burning, in 2017, and signed with Columbia Records after releasing another single the following year. Her 2019 début EP, Rapture, won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, making Koffee both the youngest person and only woman to be awarded in the Best Reggae Album category.
