LESS THAN 24 hours after two field event athletes, discus thrower Roje Stona and triple jumper Shanieka Ricketts, were crowned 2024 RJRGLEANER Sports Foundation Sportsman and Sportsman of the Year, Clarendon College’s thrower Marla-Kay Lampart showcased the growth of field events in the country when she produced a national junior record at Saturday’s Central Hurdles, Relays, and Field Events meet at GC Foster College.
Competing in the women’s shot put open, Lampart achieved a personal best of 15.98 metres for the win. Her mark erased the previous mark of 15.72m set in 2015 by Lloydrica Cameron at the East NCAA Preliminary Round meet at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Lampart also placed second in the Class One discus before winning the women’s open event.
“I am very happy to know that I now have the national junior record although I didn’t know at the time it was a record. I want to continue throwing further and further as the season progresses,” said Lampart who will compete in both throwing events at the ISSA-GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships.
