An estimated fifteen hundred supporters turned out in Belmopan yesterday as the People’s United Party held its National Party Council meeting at the city’s Comprehensive School. The gathering brought together party delegates from across the country along with friends and family of the PUP in what party officials described as both a working meeting and a show of celebrations for John Briceno’s tenth anniversary as the party leader. The large attendance filled the venue, with representatives from constituencies nationwide participating in internal discussions and organizational matters. A highlight of the event was an address by Deputy Party Leader Cordel Hyde, who spoke for nearly fourteen minutes at the podium. Hyde emphasized what he described as the party’s enduring mantra of love and unity, while also pointing to Briceno’s leadership and the electoral victories achieved under his administration. He told supporters that the party’s success has come from collective effort and continued engagement with Belizeans at the community level.
The National Party Council is the most powerful and the highest group within the political organization. It comprises of one delegate for every twenty five votes received in the last general election. Representation is seen from all 31 divisions across the country. It is during these meetings that resolutions are passed for the party as a collective and positions are formed on various issues. In this case, four resolutions were adopted. First, the council gave renewed endorsement and full support to Party Leader and Prime Minister John Briceño on the occasion of his tenth anniversary leading the PUP. Secondly, delegates backed the government’s decision to pause the proposed BTL/Speednet acquisition talks and supported the Public Utilities Commission carrying out broad public consultations as part of its regulatory review. The third resolution endorsed the final national rollout of Universal Primary Health Coverage under the National Health Insurance Bill 2026, describing it as a major social policy milestone. And finally, the council pledged steadfast support for the national Million Tree Initiative, including the launch of a mobile application to track tree planting efforts. /
