Musician Pras Michel has withdrawn his lawsuit against fellow Fugees member Lauryn Hill, ending a legal dispute tied to the group’s reunion tour.
According to a March 11 filing in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the case has been dismissed without prejudice, meaning it could potentially be refiled in the future. The filing also states that each party will bear their own legal costs and attorney’s fees.
Attorneys representing both Michel and Hill did not immediately respond to requests for comment following the court submission.
Dispute Over Tour Finances
Michel originally filed the lawsuit alleging that Hill misrepresented financial details related to the Fugees reunion tour and attempted to claim a disproportionate share of the proceeds.
His attorney, Robert Meloni, previously stated that Hill sought to take 60 percent of the tour’s earnings, leaving Michel with 20 percent, rather than the group’s customary one-third split among members.
The lawsuit also alleged that Hill’s management decisions negatively affected the tour’s financial performance. Claims included that the singer canceled the second half of the tour and made last-minute announcements that contributed to poor ticket sales.
In addition, Michel alleged that Hill declined a potential US$5 million performance opportunity at the Coachellaafter learning that the group would be billed below No Doubt on the lineup.
Hill Responded to Allegations
Hill previously addressed the lawsuit in a public statement, suggesting Michel’s legal troubles may have influenced his actions.
She said she had remained largely silent on the matter because she believed Michel was under significant pressure due to his own legal challenges.
Hill also emphasized that she had no involvement in the decisions that led to Michel’s criminal case and stated that she had attempted to assist him despite the circumstances.
Michel’s Legal Troubles
The decision to drop the lawsuit comes as Michel prepares to begin serving a 14-year prison sentence stemming from a separate federal case.
He was indicted in 2019 for allegedly making illegal contributions to the Barack Obama 2012 reelection campaign. Additional charges later included bank fraud, witness tampering, concealment of material facts, and violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, along with acting as an unregistered agent for the People’s Republic of China.
Michel has denied wrongdoing and is currently appealing his conviction.
Fugees Members Continue Separate Paths
Hill last performed with Michel during the final U.S. leg of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour in November 2023.
However, she has continued to collaborate professionally with fellow Fugees member Wyclef Jean.
The two reunited for performances at SNL50: The Homecoming Concert in February 2025, and again at the Grammy Awards during a tribute to Roberta Flack.
Michel is scheduled to report to prison on March 30 as his appeal process continues.
