Leader of the Opposition Calls for Reforms After Oscar Mira Scandal

Opposition Leader Tracy Taegar-Panton has remarked that the actions surrounding former Minister of Home Affairs Oscar Mira should never be allowed to re-occur in government, saying the current controversy presents an opportunity to strengthen accountability and prevent similar situations in the future.  Panton made the comments during an interview with Love News after forwarding a three-page letter to Prime Minister John Briceño calling for a broad and independent Auditor General’s investigation into the Oscar Mira procurement matter and the operations of RECONDEV.  Speaking with Love News, Panton said the priority must be to ensure that the circumstances which gave rise to the Oscar Mira controversy are never repeated.

Tracy Panton, Leader of the Opposition: “I’ve written to the Prime Minister, I believe you may have a copy of that letter, where we have outlined very clearly what we believe needs to happen in the audit to ensure the highest levels of transparency and accountability and openness and fairness. Because we don’t want to be fair to anyone, but it can’t be more of the same, more of what we already know. We have to understand where the system has been broken, where the violations have actually occurred. We have to find out who is accountable and we have to hold those people to account to set a very clear example that this should never happen again in public office.”
