Leaders Saints clash with Hillview at Serpentine Road

New leaders of the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SporTT) Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premiership Division, St Mary’s College, could be in for the test of their lives when they face debutants Hillview College from 3.40 pm at their Serpentine Road grounds in St Clair, Port-of-Spain.

“The Saints,” as they are commonly called, assumed top position in the league with a 2-0 victory over Naparima College on Wednesday, courtesy of goals from Deron Blackman and Jaedon Thomas. The win moved them to 15 points at the top of the 17-team standings.

The Saints are looking to capitalise on a strong start after a developmental previous season. To date, they are the only team with an unblemished record. However, the Easterners have made a loud statement since their promotion to the top flight.

The Jeremy McNeo-coached Hillview got their campaign off to a positive start by thrashing home team St Anthony’s College 5-2 in a delayed fixture at Westmoorings. Though they were narrowly edged 4-3 by fellow Easterners Arima North Secondary, known as the “Dial Dynamos”, they regained their footing by registering a 6-3 triumph over Fatima College and a 4-1 victory over Mucurapo West Secondary at their Honeymoon Park grounds in El Dorado.

The Easterners will be fresh for the encounter after serving a bye in the last round of matches. Team representative Firishta Ali Hosein admitted her team faces a “David vs Goliath” clash against the unbeaten leaders.

“We acknowledge the magnitude of the task ahead. CIC has been the benchmark of consistency and dominance in the competition this season, and we fully respect the challenge they present,” said Ali Hosein.

“However, the Hillview boys have been working assiduously on the training ground to iron out the kinks in our team dynamics. We know we are the underdogs, but we are approaching this match with focus and a belief in our system. We intend to give a performance that our school and supporters can be proud of.”

Meanwhile, the Arima Velodrome will play host to another giant clash this afternoon as Arima North takes on Fatima. Coach Wayne Sheppard’s “Dial Dynamos” suffered their first defeat of the season on Wednesday, enduring a heavy 4-0 loss to St Benedict’s College on home turf, a result that will leave the Arimians eager to rebound today.

Fatima, on the other hand, is hoping to build on a 5-1 victory over Trinity College East at their Mucurapo Road home. Fatima is sixth in the standings and will require a win to improve the chances of being title contenders.
