Legal Community Honors Robertha Magnus-Usher and Agnes Segura-Gillett

The legal fraternity gathered this morning for a Special Memorial Sitting of the Full Court of the Senior Courts of Belize, held in honour of Senior Counsel Robertha Magnus-Usher and attorney-at-law Agnes Segura-Gillett. The sitting took place in the Main Courtroom on Treasury Lane in Belize City, with members of the Bench, Bar and the wider legal community paying tribute to two women whose work left a lasting mark on the profession.  Magnus-Usher, a respected Senior Counsel and former Vice President of the Bar Association of Belize, died in Jamaica in July 2025 while visiting for her mother’s funeral. Reports at the time described her passing as sudden, though no official cause of death was publicly released. She had practised in several areas of law, including corporate and commercial law, family and probate matters, real estate and litigation, and remained managing partner of her firm until her death.  Meanwhile, Agnes Segura-Gillett passed away in May of this year. President of the Bar Association of Belize, Jose Alpuche, says the sitting was an important moment for the profession to reflect on the contribution of both women and the example they set for younger attorneys.

Gianna Ramclam, who worked closely with Segura-Gillett until her passing, also reflected on her colleague’s commitment to her work, her clients and the people around her.

The memorial sitting was convened by Chief Justice Louise Esther Blenman as an opportunity for the court and legal profession to formally recognise the lives and service of both attorneys. The Senior Courts had also declared the day a dies non, suspending normal court business for the occasion.
