Local Football Referees Call Off Strike

The strike action taken by local football referees has ended after three days.

The matter was finally resolved today following two days of negotiation between the Jamaica Football Federation, Professional Football Jamaica Limited and the Jamaica Football Referees Association.

In a release this afternoon, the PFJL says the referees will resume duties on Wednesday starting with the scheduled Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League encounter between Molynes United and Vere United at the Tony Spaulding Complex starting at 3.30pm

Five more games are also on the schedule for match day 28 on Thursday.

The referees failed to show up for games in the Premier League on Sunday because of monies owed to them from as far back as last November.

They vowed to stay off the job until they are paid in full. The referees were owed 7.8 million dollars.

Nationwide Sports can confirm that 5 million of that amount was paid over late Tuesday night and 1.9 million was deposited by mid day on Wednesday.

Peter Prendergast who acted for the referees, says the outstanding amount has been paid in full, however there’s an advance payment of 1.2 million dollars based on arrangements, is still outstanding and that will be paid next week.

Valdin Legister is president of the Jamaica Football Referees Association and he told Nationwide Sports today that the referees are ready to work once they are compensated and given the tools.
