A Mahogany Heights man is in jail after being unable to pay outstanding court fines. Thirty-three-old Alton Nicholson pleaded guilty to wounding a police officer but was ultimately detained for an unpaid debt. Nicholson appeared in court Tuesday where he was charged with wounding officer Kaalon Augustine on Saturday, August 16, 2025. Nicholson pleaded guilty but with an explanation. He claimed he was sleeping on a bus when police officers suddenly “manhandled” him, causing a struggle that resulted in injuries to both him and the officer. Despite Nicholson’s account differing from the police report, the magistrate accepted his guilty plea. Nicholson received a fine of $405, to be paid by September 30, 2025, or face four months in prison. However, Nicholson was also ordered to immediately pay $500 toward an old outstanding fine of over $1,000. Unable to pay, Nicholson was remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
