Major George Price Highway Upgrade Begins Between Belize City and Hattieville

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) has announced the start of a major road upgrade project along the George Price Highway, marking a significant step in improving one of the country’s busiest transportation routes.  According to a public notice issued yesterday, works have officially commenced on what is being called the Eighth Road Project, which will focus on reconstructing and modernizing the stretch of highway between Belize City and Hattieville.  The Ministry confirms that a contract has already been signed for the civil works, with the project expected to be carried out over the next three years. The scope of works is extensive and includes widening of the roadway, installation of reinforced concrete drainage, and improvements to the existing pavement and running surface.  Additionally, the project will see sections of the highway raised in flood-prone areas, the application of hot-mix asphalt, and the construction of both major and minor intersections. Two new bridges are also planned at Burdon Creek and Hector Creek, along with the installation of road safety features aimed at modernizing infrastructure and improving user safety.  Initial works are already underway between miles nine and ten, with officials noting that while efforts will be made to minimize disruptions, motorists should expect some delays in active construction zones.  The Ministry is also reminding drivers to exercise caution while traveling through the area, urging the public to obey traffic personnel, avoid reckless driving, and adhere to all safety guidelines.
