He allegedly opened fire at police officers at a Belize City checkpoint two weeks ago. Now, 44-year-old Clive Hendricks is on remand at the Belize Central Prison. Hendricks appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today before Chief Magistrate Deborah Rogers, charged with aggravated assault with a firearm on police officer Byron Samuels. He pleaded not guilty to the charge, but, due to the nature of the offense, he was informed that the lower court could not grant him bail for 90 days. Hendricks’ next court date is set for August 12. During his court appearance, Hendricks was seen with his right hand bandaged and in a sling, a result of being shot by police during the incident, which occurred on the night of June 3. Police say they returned fire after he allegedly shot at officers. Hendricks was detained on June 3 and treated at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) and released on June 14. Notably, no firearm-related charges were levied against Hendricks today, despite police claiming a weapon was found.
