Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal stabbing in San Fernando early on Saturday morning.
Reports are that around 2:30 am today (August 23, 2025), officers from the San Fernando Police Station responded to a call about a man lying motionless on the compound of the National Insurance Board at Cross Crossing.
When they arrived at the location, they found the body of a man of African descent. The man was unresponsive.
Emergency medical technicians confirmed he had no signs of life, and the District Medical Officer later authorised the removal of the body for a post-mortem examination.
Later that morning, officers on mobile patrol in the Pavilion area of Skinner Park saw a man with a bleeding injury to his right hand. He was detained and found with a vest bearing what appeared to be bloodstains, a pair of three-quarter jeans, a plastic bag with personal documents, and a flick knife. Police said he is of Hispanic descent.
Investigators believe the suspect had been involved in a fight with the deceased earlier on the NIB compound.
Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro praised the quick response by officers in a statement:
“The response and keen powers of observation displayed by our officers were instrumental in the timely arrest of the suspect,” he said. “While we cannot be everywhere at once, our increased operational activity, supported by technology and intelligence, is enabling faster, more coordinated responses to incidents across the country, thus increasing the chances of perpetrators being brought to justice.”
The top cop added: “This is most evident in the increase in our homicide detection rate, and I would like to commend the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, led by Snr Supt Sean Dhilpaul, for the excellent job that they have been doing.”
