Man Detained in Orange Walk After Ammo Found During Traffic Stop

Police in the Orange Walk District have detained a 55-year-old man after ammunition was allegedly found in his possession during a routine traffic stop this afternoon.  According to police, at about 1:45 p.m., officers were on mobile patrol along Guinea Grass Road when their attention was drawn to a male individual riding a maroon Honda motorcycle without wearing a helmet.  The officers stopped the rider, and during a search, police reportedly found two 12-gauge shotgun cartridges on the individual, one red “Federal” brand cartridge and one transparent “Bellie” brand cartridge. When questioned, the man reportedly stated that he did not have a firearm license permitting him to possess ammunition.  Police say the man was informed of the offence of possession of ammunition without a gun license, cautioned, and advised of his constitutional rights. He was then escorted to the Orange Walk Police Station along with the ammunition.  At the station, the individual was identified as Elvis Suchite, a 55 years old Belizean laborer of Guinea Grass Village, Orange Walk District. The ammunition was labeled as exhibits, placed into a sealed manila envelope in his presence, and he was invited to sign for the exhibits, which police say he refused. He was also issued an acknowledgment form explaining his rights and again declined to sign.  The exhibits were later handed over to the exhibit keeper through a proper chain of custody.
