Man Gored to Death by Bull on Farm in Southern Belize

A man was attacked and killed by a bull yesterday on a farm in the Hummingbird Community in southern Belize.  The attack occurred just before one o’clock in the afternoon when 48-year-old, Enrique Barrera went to feed his bull.  Whilst feeding, the animal reportedly charged at Barrera, goring him in the right inner thigh.  The farmer was able to reach his family but was unable to seek quick medical attention.  His relatives eventually got to the Southern Regional Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival.  Chairman of the Hummingbird Community, Cornelio Boudilio, spoke to Love News, saying that Barrera had acquired the animal as a calf and had been taking care of it for years.

Cornelio Baudilio, Chairman, HummingBird Community: “He went to his farm and they had some aggressive bulls. One of the bulls struck him on his leg with its horn. He was transported to the hospital but by the time he arrived it was too late. They liv at Mile 25 Hummingbird where I’m chairman and he was with his father in law Raymundo Pop. They own the farm within the village. He was my good friend. He got the bull from it was a baby so I’m not sure why it would attack him but it was the first time.”

Dangriga Police responded to the incident and visited the Emergency Ward at the SRH where they observed a deep and long wound on the inner thigh area of his right leg; measuring approximately one foot in length, along with bruises to the lower abdomen area.  Barrera was originally from Honduras, but had migrated to Belize.
