Man Killed After Falling From Garbage Truck and Being Struck by Bus

A man was killed this afternoon after reportedly falling from the rear of a moving garbage truck and being run over by a passenger bus in Lord’s Bank Village.  Police responded to the traffic accident on Lord’s Bank Road at approximately 1:20 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found a green International-brand garbage truck at the centre of the road and the motionless body of Andrew Alexander Smith lying nearby. A passenger bus was parked approximately seventy-five feet away.  Initial investigations indicate that the bus, driven by 35-year-old Robert Escobar of Burrell Boom Village, was travelling from east to west. At the same time, the garbage truck, driven by 48-year-old Oren Sutherland of Ladyville, was travelling in the opposite direction.  As the two vehicles passed each other, Smith reportedly fell from the rear of the garbage truck and landed directly in the path of the bus. The bus then struck and ran over him.  A witness reported hearing a loud impact before looking over and seeing Smith under the passing bus.  Police processed the scene, prepared a sketch plan and recorded witness statements. A urine sample was also obtained from the bus driver as part of the investigation. Both drivers reportedly held valid licenses, and the two vehicles were insured.  Smith’s body was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital morgue, where he was officially pronounced dead at 4:07 this afternoon.
