Man Remanded After Alleged Sexual Assault of 14-Year-Old Girl

A 14-year-old girl is the latest reported victim of a sexual assault, and the man accused of inappropriately touching her twice could soon face a second charge. Tonight, 57-year-old Salvador Cus is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after being denied bail on one count of sexual assault. Cus is accused of inappropriately touching the teen during a sleepover at a family member’s home. He appeared unrepresented this morning before the Chief Magistrate in Court Number One, where he was read a single charge. (COURT VO STARTS) Allegations are that on Sunday, July 12th, Cus grabbed the minor as she walked past him in a hallway and touched her inappropriately, then followed her into the kitchen and did so again. Despite the two incidents, he was charged with only one count. Cus tried to explain himself in court, but the Chief Magistrate said no explanation or plea would be taken at this stage. He was immediately denied bail, with the Magistrate citing the rising number of sexual allegations involving minors nationwide. The court will await guidance from the DPP’s office on whether the matter proceeds by indictment in the Supreme Court or summarily in the Magistrate’s Court. Cus was told he may apply for bail in the Supreme Court. The prosecutor said Cus is expected to face an additional charge, since the facts point to two separate acts against the victim. He remains on remand until his next court date, set for October 13th.
