As the news cycle continues into its third week of coverage over the government contracts awarded to members of the Mira family, Maria Arthurs was today officially sworn in as Belize’s Contractor General. The swearing-in marks Arthurs’ second consecutive term in the position. As Contractor General, Arthurs is responsible for monitoring the award and implementation of government contracts to ensure that procurement processes are carried out impartially, on merit, and in accordance with the law. The office is designated to serve as an important oversight mechanism that would safeguard the proper use of public resources and reinforcing good governance practices. In context of the Mira contracts, the irony of the presence of a contractor general is that its mandate includes ensuring that government contracts conform to procurement laws and regulations, helping to strengthen public confidence in the management of taxpayer-funded projects and services. Arthurs was first appointed and sworn in as Contractor General on May 25, 2023, succeeding Omar Mitchell, who demitted office upon reaching the mandatory retirement age. She is now set to continue in this capacity up until 2029. Prior to assuming the role, Arthurs built a career in economics and public administration. She worked as an economist with international development institutions, including the Caribbean Development Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank. She has also served on the boards of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority and the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, while contributing to national bodies such as the National Environmental Appraisal Committee and the National Road Safety Committee. Arthurs holds a Master’s Degree in Finance from Galen University.
