Mathew Knowles Says Destiny’s Child Is Bigger Than TLC Globally

Mathew Knowles  is on social media giving his two cents about the music industry of the past and present, drawing clear distinctions between domestic fame and global dominance. In one example he uses Diamond selling TLC and the multi-Platinum group Destiny’s Child which he formed as prime examples.

“Artists in America, that’s what they do. They focus in on just America,” Knowles said.

According to Knowles, this limited focus is what separates many successful artists from those who achieve worldwide legacy. While TLC and other iconic groups like SWV dominated the U.S. charts and shaped an era, their reach beyond America didn’t match the global footprint built by Destiny’s Child.

“And that’s when we say Destiny’s Child are the number one female group in the world. It’s because when we look at artists like TLC, SWV, no disrespect to any of those, but they didn’t sell records outside of America like Destiny’s Child did,” he explained.

The Destiny’s Child creator said the group was developed with an international vision from the start, targeting audiences far beyond the U.S. market through global promotion, touring, and branding.

“And that’s why Destiny’s Child is ranked the number one female girl group of all times,” he noted.

TLC is a legendary girl group formed in 1990 in Atlanta, best known for members T-Boz, Left Eye, and Chilli. They became one of the biggest acts of the 1990s, scoring multiple hit songs—including four #1 singles—and releasing hugely successful albums like CrazySexyCool, which went diamond and has now sold over 12 million units in the US.

The group sold over 60 million records worldwide and earned numerous awards, including Grammys and MTV VMAs, making them one of the best-selling and most influential girl groups ever.

After the death of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in 2002, the group continued as a duo and later released a final album in 2017. They’ve since received major honors, including lifetime achievement awards and induction into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame.

Destiny’s Child has also sold over 60 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling girl groups of all time.

Formed in Houston in 1990, the group’s final lineup—Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams—became known for their powerful harmonies, performances, and themes of female empowerment. They rose to fame with hits like “Say My Name,” “Bills, Bills, Bills,” and later “Survivor” and “Bootylicious.”

Despite early lineup changes and internal conflicts, the trio achieved massive success with albums like The Writing’s on the Wall and Survivor. They went on hiatus in the early 2000s to pursue solo careers before reuniting for their final album Destiny Fulfilled (2004). All three members Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams have successful solo careers.

Since officially disbanding in 2006, the group has reunited for major performances, including the Super Bowl and Coachella. They’ve earned numerous awards and are widely regarded as one of the most influential and successful girl groups in music history.
