Mavado’s ‘Return of the Gully Gad’ Concert Postponed: “This is a time for unity and recovery, not celebration,” says CJ Milan

Mavado’s highly anticipated Jamaican homecoming has been placed on pause, as “Reggae Fest: The Return of Mavado” is officially postponed in the wake of Hurricane Melissa’s devastating impact. The concert, set for Saturday, December 27 at Plantation Cove in St Ann, would have marked the dancehall icon’s first major Jamaican performance in almost a decade. However, event organiser CJ Milan says the island’s recovery must come first.

In a heartfelt statement, Milan explained that the decision came after witnessing the storm’s destruction firsthand during her recent trip to Jamaica. She spent days delivering supplies and speaking with affected families, ultimately concluding that hosting a high-energy celebration at this time “wouldn’t reflect the love and responsibility” she feels for the country that built her career. “This is a time for unity and recovery, not celebration,” she noted, emphasising that both she and Mavado are aligned in putting Jamaica’s well-being above entertainment.

Milan, widely regarded as one of dancehall’s most influential modern promoters, has spent the past decade reshaping the genre’s global stage. From producing sold-out Reggae Fest spectacles across the U.S. to orchestrating Bounty Killer and Vybz Kartel’s historic Barclays Center comeback, her events have become cultural milestones. The now-postponed Mavado show was intended to be another chapter in that legacy — a triumphant homecoming for the “Weh Dem A Do” hitmaker, whose return to Jamaica became possible after his 2018 arrest warrant was lifted earlier this year.

A new date for the concert will be announced “when the island is in a better place to celebrate together,” according to Milan. All tickets have already been refunded as of Thursday, 4 December. For fans hoping to witness Mavado’s long-awaited return to the Jamaican stage, the pause signals patience — and the promise of an even more meaningful moment when the time is right.
