May Day High’s juniors created a major upset recently in the preliminary round of the rural schoolgirls netball competition after upstaging defending champions Holmwood Technical 38-34 in their Group D fixture at home.
It was a close contest from the start, with May Day edging ahead 10-9 after the first quarter. Both teams went into the half-time break locked at 20-20.
The defending champions took control in the third quarter, leading 31-27 and looking set for victory. However, urged on by their vocal home supporters, the Janet Hunter-coached May Day team rallied strongly in the final stanza, outscoring Holmwood 11-3 to pull off a four-goal win in the end.
