Maya Communities Celebrate Indigenous Peoples Resistance Day in Southern Belize

Amidst color, culture, history and heritage…the Maya of southern Belize celebrated Indigenous Peoples Resistance Day, yesterday. Paul Mahung has more.

Paul Mahung, Toledo Correspondent: A major event in Rural Toledo celebrated Indigenous peoples’ struggles, achievements, their quest for human rights, as well as colorful activities showcasing traditional indigenous culture, attire, music, dances, food, and spiritual practices.

Pablo Mis: ”Beautiful day over the weekend, both Saturday and Sunday. To see the many colors of peoples coming together, the smiles no matter how difficult it is, it is always  amazing to see the solidarity of all people coming together.  We had a deep reflection on the challenges that uh Indigenous Peoples  in the process of building their communities, building beliefs have been born through here in the Tulio District. We had esteemed uh speakers, Dr. Filiberto Pinados,  Mr. Delmar Tzib, Mr. Audrey Matura, Christina Coc and many other interventions from leaders, young people, women who together felt  that despite the challenges,  we have prevailed and we continue to prevail. On Sunday, we gathered in Santa Cruz and estimates are around a few thousand, we have about 3,000 people  in solidarity amongst us. But we also want to highlight the  eagerness and the keenness of key policymakers, particularly the Minister of Indigenous Peoples Affairs, Dr. Honourable Louis Zabaneh, Dr. Honourable  Osmond Martinez  was also there.  We also had Area Representative for Toledo West, Honourable  Oscar Requena. So it was a deep reflection between leaders,  communities,  policymakers,  those that are in the chambers of  lawmaking for Belize, those that are in the quarters of actually shaping  national policy, national development plan.  And  we should celebrate.”
