Mayor Earl Trapp Calls Out Area Reps Over Lack of Town Council Support for Twin Towns

San Ignacio and Santa Elena Mayor Earl Trapp is calling out the three area representatives serving the twin towns, saying they have not used their Constituency Development Fund to help the Town Council with upkeep and maintenance. Trapp made the criticism yesterday at the United Democratic Party’s press conference, where he was officially presented as the party’s mayoral candidate for a fifth consecutive term.  Addressing the gathering, Trapp said the council has been carrying out its responsibilities without financial assistance from those area representatives through the fund. He called for support toward maintaining the twin towns.

Earl Trapp, Mayor of San Ignacio / Santa Elena: “Our twin towns are unique. We are made of three constituencies, Cayo Central, Cayo Northeast and Cayo North. And when we look at the resources available for constituents’ development we must ask an important question “What are the three area reps doing with the resources entrusted to them?” Under the constituency development fund, each of these constituencies receive $20,000 monthly. That is $240,000 annually per constituency. Over six years, that amounts to $1.44 million for each constituency directly into the hands of the area representative. Multiply that by three and we are talking about $4.32 million in constituency development resources over six years, $4.3 million dollars. Our residents in San Ignacio and Sant Elena need to know on what our tax dollars are being invested. That is enough resources to do some real and magic in our community. But the people deserve to see the results. They deserve to know where these resources are being invested, what projects are being undertaken, and what difference those investments are making in their lives.”

Trapp will face the People’s United Party’s Aaron Mai in the March municipal elections.
