SEVERAL JAMAICANS were in action yesterday at the Folksam Grand Prix in Varberg, Sweden, a World Continental Challenge meet, where Odaine McPherson produced the best performance among his countrymen.
McPherson picked up the only win of the day for the Jamaicans after capturing the men’s 100 metres in 10.09 seconds. Henrik Larsson of Sweden was second in 10.12, with Udodi Chudi Onwuzurike of Nigeria, third in 10.13. Earlier, McPherson had finished second in his heat in 10.13 to book his spot in the final.
In the women’s 100, Alana Reid had to settle for second in 11.23 as Liranyi Alonso of Dominica won the event in 11.15. Julia Henriksson of Sweden was third in 11.46.
In field events, there were second-place finishes for Danniel Thomas-Dodd and Shawn D. Thompson.
Competing in the women’s shot put, Thomas-Dodd, the national champion, had a heave of 18.82 metres for the runner-up spot. Fanny Roos of Sweden won with a mark of 19.14, and Katharina Maisch of Germany was third with 17.93.
Thompson was second in the men’s long jump with a distance of 7.75 metres. Thobias Montler of Sweden won with 7.79, and third went to Cheswill Johnson of South Africa.
